Earlier this week, I checked the weather forecast, and today was supposed to be a beautiful day, so I reserved a spot for Willow at doggy day care, and I planned a bike ride. One of my good cycling friends is coming to visit next week, so I wanted to do a reconnaissance ride of the route I’m planning to take her on when she’s here. The route heads east through the city and down to the Mosel and then loops back. I think the towns on the Mosel are so cute, and a stop at a cafe and to enjoy the sound of the river flowing by is a perfect mid-ride break.
Well, for the whole ride I was wanting to call this blog post Luxembourg = Construction-bourg because there is construction here everywhere, and today it was driving me nuts. Within the first 45 minutes if my ride, I had to stop 3 separate times for construction zones where traffic was closed down to one lane.
I also had to reroute my planned loop because an entire section of road was gone. Sometimes cyclists can get through construction areas by hopping up on the side walk (or foot path, as they call it here) or riding through gravel, but not this time; the way was completely shut.
But the fact is that even though all the construction added almost a half hour to my ride, it was still a great ride. I was happy to be on my bike. I was soaking in all the scenery like a kid in a toy store. I was loving the sunny warm weather – first ride all year in shorts and a jersey, no knee warmers or arm warmers! And, it was my longest ride of the year so far. And I felt good! And now, several hours after the ride, I’m not zonked out on the couch feeling exhausted. So I’ll take that!
In fact, because of the construction, I found a new route that I like even better than the original route. It was a narrow road barely wide enough for a car to pass a biker, and it was kind of busy today, but I’m betting that once construction on the main road is finished, it will be the perfect quiet road.
The yellow flower fields were in bloom and were really pretty.
As I got closer to home I could see clouds starting to roll in from the north; seems like I timed the ride perfectly because I never got rained on.
After the ride, I picked up Willow for the kennel, gave her a bath (because she always has lots of doggy drool on her from playing at the kennel), and then it started pouring. Now we are hanging out on the couch listening to the rain. It was a good day!

And you went to the Moselle. Extreme WWII significance, which I’m sure you know. I’ve learned all about the Moselle, Thionville, Metz, etc from my Grandpa Stan. Google the 90th Infantry Division to learn about their route if you’re interested. They crossed the Moselle to take Metz. I bet you are riding down roads they crossed (before they were roads probably). Amazing!

The yellow flowers are probably rapeseed (AKA canola).
I’d love to see your route.

Amanda – Here is a link to my route: http://www.mapmyride.com/routes/view/91059999.
I rode to Senningerberg. The easiest way there is via the bike route that goes through Kirchberg (I think it’s PC1 or PC2). Once I got to Senningerberg, I did the loop counter-clockwise. The road is closed in Rodenbourg, so when I got to Olingen, I went off course and took a right on 134 and then a left on Rue d’Eschweiler and took that to Eschweiler. Then I took Rue de Gonderange into Gonderange. You can pick up the bike path in Gonderange that takes you all the way back to Luxembourg Ville through Kirchberg.
